Frequently Asked Questions

How does one use the editor and do a simple bullet list?

Two ways:

  1. Highlight the line and click on the button for the bulleted list in the editor
  2. Indent two spaces and make an asterisk followed by a space with your line

When a page is edited, is someone notified? If so, can the changes be readily seen or are they only found by comparing the old with the new?

There is no notification by email except to the administrator of the wiki. There is RSS which will tell anybody interested what pages are on the wiki and will do it according to what RSS reader they are using and how it is configured. More information on RSS can be found here. When you come to look at the site, you can check “Recent Changes.”

There is a built-in comparison for each page called “history.” Click on “history” on the left navigation and you will be presented with the changes made on the page. Click on the little eyeglasses to the right of a version to compare it to the version right above it. So to compare the current version to the one before, you would click on the eyeglasses to the right of the second version in the list. The changes are highlighted so that you can easily see them.

How do I change font size?

For the most part you do not change font size. The font size is determined by the stylesheet that is set up for the wiki and gives a certain size depending on whether the item is a paragraph, heading, etc. A person may set their own stylesheet for their browser to be used instead. This is a good thing especially for people who are visually impaired. Setting font sizes within a document in exact rather than proportional sizes is therefore not a good idea.

You can set a header at the beginning of a section and the size of the font will be proportionately larger depending on which header you choose. H1 is the largest size and is what we use for the top heading–the title of the page. On this page, H2 is being used for the questions.

You can also use superscript and subscript:

You can use subscript and superscript.

I have a habit of using a double space between sentences. Will that create a problem?

It is not a problem if you put two spaces between sentences. I have put two spaces between this sentence and the previous one. It will show up as only one space. However, if you put two spaces before you begin a paragraph, it will get made into plain, preformatted text.:

I have indented this line with 2 spaces. I have put two spaces between these sentences.

These two spaces between sentences will show up, because this is preformatted text due to the intitial 2 space indent on the paragraph.

What happens when someone else is responding to the same page at the same time or does that not happen?

When someone starts to edit, a lock is put on the file. That lock lasts for a while and they get a one minute or so warning when it is about to run out. Do “preview” which will restart the countdown to give you more time. If you have something very long to write, it is good to do it in a text editor like Notepad in Windows or one of the many available for Linux. Then copy and paste it into the editor in the browser, preview and save if it looks right or close enough to right. Don’t worry a lot about formatting, because someone can always fix it later.

Also, if your “lock-timer” expired and somebody edits the page before you save your changes, the DokuWiki-System will ask you on how to preceed. Since all versions of a page are archived, anything can be fixed :)
