Many generic systems will work with linux, ask your supplier. Also, if you build your PC from parts (or upgrade some components), you should check if they do support linux well. Checking before you buy will ensure good support and a positive linux-experience.

I do NOT recommend running Linux on old hardware if you are new to linux. Your first linux-installation should be on reasonably current hardware (about 6months to 1.5 yrs. old). But if you have to install linux on that ancient box, read “GNU/Linux on old hardware” first.
