Hi Terry
First I have to say I have no experience using slackware at all. I haven't actually used Xmodmap myself but a friend has used it to map unused keycodes to keysyms . As far as I am aware it goes something like this in a kde environment.
1.Find unused keycodes
2.Map one or more(depending on how many special characters you need) to unused key symbols(eg:f12, home , etc) by editing the .Xmodmap file
3)assign the special characters you want to use to those keys.
