Hi Jim,

I have no idea what your level of interest in Linux is, so the
following may not be of great interest to you. Some people are not
interested in an operating system other than it quietly sit in the
background and do it's job. Others like to experiment and explore and
figure out what makes it tick.
If you are the explorer type, definitions become important. Linux
is a kernel that performs a job similar to command.com in DOS or
windows.exe in that OS. The number that is assigned to it is not
arbitrary, it gives you information about it's current state of
development. The most recent distributions are using the 2.6.xx kernel.
Anyone from an individual to a multinational corporation may take
that kernel and add a file system, window manager, package manager,
productive programs, etc. and create a distribution. The number assigned
to a distribution is more arbitrary and can not be used to compare one
distro to another. For example, Mepis 6.0 may be using a newer kernel
than SuSE 9.3. I am guessing you installed SuSE 10.1.
Welcome to LinuxBasics and I hope you found this of some value.
