This may sound a bit off the wall, but, from reading your message about 
wanting to get just what programming felt like, you may want to look 
into the Guido von Robot (GvR) lessons. These are lessons which 
introduce a simple robot controlling language using the python syntax. 
This is a simple introduction to programming with something you can see 
on the screen for a visual result to your program. It may be designed 
for younger starting programmers, but that later lessons can be quite 
challenging. I had a ball doing them!
