Funny thing, I just opened terminal again to try your solution and it
didn't ask for a password this time.  Hmmmm.  I think it is just playing

IIRC Knoppix does not come with the root password enabled on the live cd.

Knoppix has a pretty complete set of documentation.  Did you try searching
for pass word requirements?
