Both xterm and konsole are terminal emulators; konsole adds a lot of
bells and whistles. For specific differences, see the man pages.
If write works in xterm, but not konsole, it may be that konsole
executes 'mesg n' to turn messages off. Try 'mesg y' to turn it on.

A tty is a virtual terminal (ctrl-alt-f1...f6 to get there,
and (usually) alt-f7 to get back to the GUI).
