[LBo] Chapter 7 - Directory permissions

If I would >chmod 700 dirname< to make directories private, would I have 
a hard time seeing them from another distro or Windows, or would it only 
affect the initial distribution it is on?

My gut feeling tells me that the permission has to do with the file 
itself, but maybe I am wrong and permissions are handled otherwise.

I don't want to do something so secure on my computer, it will even be 
secured from me!
