Members of my family have had both a laptop and desktop hard drive fail in the
last 3 months - both displayed erratic working of Windo$e Explorer as a
symptom - don't know if this is same as "ls -l" ???

On a separate note, most h/drive manufacturers [eg West. Digital, Maxtor ]
have disk - checking utilities to down load from their sites, which give a
good idea of the disk's health.
