[LBo] Getting Connected

Linux friends,
I have not tried all your suggestions yet (particularly yours, Stefan) beca=
use I had a "bright" idea I just had to try in Windows XP and wanted to rep=
ort it.

The thought occurred to me that logically my computer did not have to know =
anything about my ISP insofar as IP addresses and such are concerned - That=
 should be the router's job.

To confirm this I ran windows ipconfig twice, once when connected directly =
to the internet and once when connected through the router (causing great t=
hrashing and panic in my son's room when Halo suddenly evaporated from his =
screen). The results are shown below and you can see that nothing about the=
ISP's real world addresses is known to the computer when it is going throu=
gh the router. The computer only knows what the router tells it and the rou=
ter tells it nothing about the ISP.

I'm now beginning to think that I am not even getting out onto my ethernet =
LAN. First of all, pinging never returns anything. Secondly, YaST has a sui=
te of setup programs grouped under Network Services and one of these is for=
setting up DHCP. No matter what addresses I use in this utility, and I hav=
e tried them all, it always reports the same error message: "Error occurred=
 while restarting the DHCP daemon".

I went onto the internet and confirmed what I have always believed - My net=
work card, a CNET Model PRO200WL, is indeed Linux approved. What is more, L=
inux itself seems to like it, it reports the network card as "Davicom 21x4 =
DED-Tulip Compatible 10/100 Ethernet" IP Address: "DHCP"

Maybe SUSE 10.0 doesn't have the latest driver software for my network card=
or something like that. So, my question is, does anyone know of a way to d=
o a loopback test of my internet card? (That's what we used to do in the oo=
oooold days.) Or some other simple minded way of confirming that it works (=
a flashlight bulb?). Even though it would be a great pain in my pocketbook,=
I could even buy a different network-card if you folks could half-way agre=
e on one that was a sure-fire winner.

Two Output Results From Running: windows\system32\ipconfig.exe /all =
