Hi Lynn,

Just a couple of points from newbie who was in same position 9 months ago.

1] Is your nic = eth0?
I have an audigy s/card with IEEE 1394 [ digital audio device ] that Mandriva 
registers as eth0, and assigns my realtek nic to eth1 - so to be able to 
network I have to enable eth1 [ not eth0 ].
[ Although Debian assigns the nic to eth0 ].

2] Do you have ppp0 [ modem or cable transfer ] enabled ?
I have just switched from dial-up to broadband. With dial-up, when i enabled 
ppp0, eth0/1 would not work -  in either Debian or Mandriva - and vice versa.
