Have you installed    mc   on your system yet?  mc works a lot like
Norton Commander, I have heard anyway, and is a very handy tool, kind of
a half way between total command line and the GUI.

Anyway, I usually open a terminal in X, do the mount bit, then fire up
mc and navigate my way to, in my case, /mnt/usb, and I have what is on
my thumb drive, camera disk, etc.

Or, once you have mounted the thumb drive, do  cd /media/sda  and then
you can ls -al and this will list what you have in/on there.
