I assume that you have Kanotix installed on drive. If not, let us know.
I run Kanotix, so I can tell you how I deal with my USB gizmos. I just
plug them in in the USB port and I can read and write them using
Konqueror, which happens to start automatically in the case of my MP3
player automatically (mounted as /media/sda1), and my mp3 player memory
card (mounted as /dev/sdb1). So...
Just plug your USB thumb drive in a USB port. It should be
automagically detected and can be browsed in Kanotix with Konqueror.
By the way, Kanotix mounts stuff in /media. The devices are in /dev,
but are mounted for the user in /media.
(These USB gizmos tend to be vfat, although I am not sure about a thumb
drive).
So I never go in the command line to access my usb devices.
However, the Kanotix gurus on the #Kanotix IRC channel recommend to
unmount the device before unplugging it (even if it can just be
unplugged, there is a risk involved for the filesystem and they don't
recommend just unplugging).
Hope this helps.
