Now I'm confused. WINS doesn't give out IP addresses. It's Microsoft's failed
attempt at a DNS replacement. So, typically a windows box will, if configured,
on boot up register it's IP with a WINS server. As was already said, Samba can
do this to. I've never done it preferring to just use DNS.
Anyway, I'm going to assume DHCP is running on the Windows box down the hall
where you have been getting your IP from.
So, to be clear, You have a DHCP/WINS server (No DNS) available down the hall
that is out of your control. You have a Win98 box on which you want to share a
printer and files on. And you want your other Windows clients to be able to
access the samba shares and printer. Correct me if I'm wrong on any of this.
I don't see any reason why you couldn't get your IP address from the server
down the hall. One easy way is the DHCP reservation I mentioned already. But,
if you don't want to do that, or the admin of the DHCP server wont do it for
you then you can setup Samba to use a WINS server which should then allow name
resolution for your windows clients even if the IP address of the Samba server
changes. This is all in theory, I never did this setup before so I don't know
how well it works in real life.
Hopefully I got your situation in my head correctly. Let me know if I'm off
base.
