[LBo] Help troubleshooting computer lockup problem

The computer is a 1.3 ghz AMD with 3 sticks of 133mhz. 512 mb ram I have MS
Vista installed on it, which runs fine with no lockups.

I ha been trying to install Kubuntu on it and running it is where the problem
showed. It runs fine from the live cd, no lockups. But installed (from the
install cd not the live cd) it will freeze after maybe 5-10 min of operation.
No particular program is running when the freeze happens.

When I say locking up, I mean the mouse freezes, the keyboard becomes
unresponsive, nothing works, but the on off switch on the computer.

In the #LBo chat Sunday someone mentioned it might be a bad stick of ram, so I
ran memtest on all 3 sticks of ram (individually). One stick would show about
one error for every hour of the testing run. So I replaced it with a stick of
133mhz 128mb (oh how the mighty have fallen, hehehe)
That didn't fix the problem.

I reinstalled and this time I used Xubuntu. All seemed fine, til maybe 30 min
into the run when it did the same thing. I'd say it was an overheating/video
card problem, but then why does it not happen when running Vista. I do plan to
swap out the video card some time in the next few days, but I'm not sure that
will fix it.

So any suggestions from the group as to my next steps troubleshooting this weird
problem? No I haven't ask on any of the #*buntu channels nor have I browsed
their wiki, (yet).

TIA
