"I don't think you are missing anything.  I don't remember if I specifically
mentioned it, but it is possible to have a dynamic IP and use samba 
with a wins server to provide name resolution.

Sorry I hadn't spotted Anita was using a NBNS on the network- if so then  dynamic IPs for the samba/printer are fine.

Also, if the DHCP server is a Windows 2000
or newer server it can update DNS and WINS on behalf of the DHCP client in the
event that the client doesn't do it for itself.

So do I , the first you know of a DHCP failure is when u boot up and are told- then its a case of no network resources for you and not a lot you can do about unless you are the admin.haha. There is also a lot of problem areas on multi subnetted Lans with Samba and print servers under wins.
