While I cannot answer the above question, here is an alternative to Xchat.
I use Skype, which is both a computer-to-telephone and computer-to-computer
chat program. It offers both talk and typed chat as well as
computer-to-telephone in the US & Canada until 2007 for free. I use Skype
in Novell's SuSE Linux 9.3 and it works quite well. It is an easy download
and there are installs for both Windows and Linux.
