[LBo] IRC Client

Hello to All,
This will be my first message which might become helpful to others.

Stefan got me started looking in the right direction. I searched the SuSE
10.0 DVD and, sure enough, xchat was there. However, when I went to install
it I did not find a YaST menu item "software installation" as Stefan
suggested (I now believe that SuSE 10.x is quite different from earlier
versions insofar as the operator interface is concerned.), so I used the
method I had used in the past; right click on the RPM file name and select
"install with YaST" from the menu which comes up. The result was exactly the
same as before; I received the same old error message "...can't find
xchatxchat..." and the install bailed-out.
But perseverance paid off and I found out how to do it. This is the
procedure:

Start YaST.
--> Software --> Software Management
This brings up a rather intimidating search screen. In the "filter" textbox
in the upper left corner, click on the down-arrow for a list of five
choices. These will be: Selections, Package Groups, Languages, Search, and
Installation Summary. Pick "Package Groups".
A new screen appears and on the left side of it is a menu tree. Scroll down
to "Productivity" -->Networking --> IRC. On the right side will ten choices
of software packages with check-boxes. Check the box for "xchat". Hit OK and
a screen comes up requesting you to insert CD1; do it. This will happen for
two more CD's and it does take a while for all the harddrive exercises to
stop.
The installation program will end abruptly, returning you to where you
started a long time ago.
So where's the program? It's not on the desk top and not front and center on
the menu like Windows does it. It is neatly and automatically placed in your
menu just where you will like it, under Internet --> Chat --> xchat IRC.
And It Works.

Clearly, during my original install of SuSE 10.0 I should not have selected
"typical installation"; I should selected "everything you've got, Daddy-O"

Life is Good!
Lynn
