Anita, Stefan & Jisao,
Thank you for your interest in my (certainly elementary) problems.
These problems are stated below but first, in response to Anita's reply, let
me say that my "machine code to assembly language to fortran" remark was
true. I am marginally literate in computer science having long ago worked in
the field for about twenty-five years beginning when "RAM" was an acoustic
delay line and, not long thereafter, a couple of my remarkable colleagues
invented the term "boot program" for the contents of the little 16 byte
toggle-switch memory they had come up with. On the other hand I would guess
that I am now nearly twenty years technologically obsolete. (In computer
science that's the rough equivalent of needing to make the jump from
flint-and-steel to matches.)
1. Suse linux V.10 is installed and running on my machine in a dual boot
configuration.
2. I have the Suse "Bible" pub.by Wiley plus three glossaries available from
the internet.
3. After a couple hours attempting to get Linux to recognize my LAN router,
I gave up. Any ideas?
4. I would also like to modify the default boot param of </menu.1st> so that
Windows boots instead of Linux. The "Bible" tells me I can do this but fails
to explain how. It appears to be other than a text file so it must be a
compiled file - The "Bible" apparently leaves this as an exercise for the
student. What's the correct answer, please?
5. I suspect that Linux does not recognize my printer/scanner but I have not
yet made any attempt to get those running. However, there was great joy in
the tepee when it recognized my trackball right from the git-go.
6. The subject line of this e-mail, "Microsoft Will Win", is neither a taunt
nor a desire - It is a most unhappy and unexpected realization after my
brief experience with Microsoft's only competitor.
Thanks much,
Lynn
