I like the idea of grub or lilo on a floppy.  That's the way I suggest 
on the booting tutorial in the grub section: 
http://linuxbasics.org/tutorials/during/booting#boot_manager.  At the 
bottom it tells how to do this with lilo also. 

http://linuxbasics.org/tutorials/advanced/grub_command_line tells 
something about using that grub command line.  I used it just the other 
day to boot into Mepis which for some reason was not booting through the 
menu.  I found out that the line giving root (hd0,6) was missing.  
Knowing how to get in with the grub command line was really helpful.  
You can't do that with lilo that I know of.
