(I am beginning to hate that subject line I started.)

Good morning to all of you,
I am totally impressed with your collective responses to help me get Linux
up and running. It will take me a while to respond to each of your
suggestions and/or questions but here is some initial input [ I agree with
Stefan that getting the LAN/Internet connection going is first priority. ]:

1. The network params I am using with Windows XP are as follows:
In Control Panel "Network Connections"
Under "LAN Connection Status" is found:
-- IP Address: 192.168.123.100
-- Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
-- Default Gateway: 192.168.123.254
-- Physical Address: 00-80-AD-7A-47-0B
-- DHCP Server: (same as Default Gateway)
-- DNS Server: (same as Default Gateway)
In "Internet Properties"
Under "LAN Settings" - The box is checked for "Automatically Detect
Settings"

2. The printer part of my printer/scanner is working. The reason I think the
scanner is not being recognized is because the Kooka Scanning package (part
of the KDE project) which came with SUSE does not "know" it exists. Under
Settings, the option "Select Scan Device" does nothing, no window, no
message, nothing; and I don't just mean it is greyed out, it's not, it's
active.

3. The reason for why I though I was unable to edit < /boot/grub/menu.1st >
was because the text editor always came up showing a blank file - Now I'm
thinking it really IS a blank file! Could this be possible? I thought it was
a key params file for SUSE's version of the GRUB boot loader.

4. New problem -
Somehow I created two names and passwords for myself when I responded to a
text-box page which I thought was referring to my user name and password for
my ISP account. These two names and requests for password ID now appear on
the Linux shut-down screen.
Is there a way I can totally shut off all this user name & password business
in Linux? (I occasionally get a message telling me I don't have "permission"
to do something or a message requesting a password before I can do
something - All of this is extremely irritating and was a factor in my
decision to get off XP and onto Linux.)

Thanks for your help, much thanks,
Lynn
