You got that wrong, Howard.

If you remember root's password, then you can change it like anybody 
else's. Log in or su to root, and then run the passwd-command.

If you DON'T remember root's password, then (and only then) you need to 
do some fancy tricks to recover root-access to your machine.

If you don't remember a USER'S password, log in or su to root and run 
"passwd username" to set a new password.
