I don't know if this will help.  It is new to me; so I haven't tried it. 
  Check 'man XF86Config-4' for the DisplaySize <width><height> entry 
under the Monitor.  It says:

  DisplaySize  width height
    This optional entry gives the width and height, in millimetres, of 
the picture area of the monitor.  If given, this is used to calculate 
the horizontal and vertical pitch (DPI) of the screen.

This might affect the size of the fonts by doing basically the same 
thing as what Stefan has listed above.  What do you all think on this? 
I read somewhere that the automatic setup of X can get the wrong numbers 
sometimes, but if you measure the screen and put that into the x 
configuration file, it takes care of it.
