Using gdm login page, "Actions" + " Configure Login Manager" has tab to "Allow
Root to Login" [ I know its less secure but I'm the only user ].
Also with gdm, "Session" tab gives choice of gnome, kde or failsafe - which
all work either as user or root.

[ I originally installed Deb with gnome [ hence default gdm ] then added kde,
which gdm login seems happy with].

I am changing /etc/x11/default-display-manager from gdm to kdm.

The kdm login screen for user or root just brings up new login screen [ as if
it was a failed password? ]. However, the kdm "menu" tab allows me to do a
"console login" which will then only "startx" into gnome [ not kde ].

Am I missing some settings here of "DisplayManager" v. "Desktop" ?

Thanks,
Geoff
ps don't waste too much time, it's not crucial.
