As mentioned above you need an ftp program, while ftp from the command line
will work its not exactly the most intuitive way for a beginner. I use gftp
which is the gnome ftp program. This give you a window which is split in to
two vertical windows. On the left is your file system (windows explorer
style) and once you have made a connection to the ftp server the righthand
window will display the file system of you web server.
You simply select the files you want to upload from your pc and then select
the folder where you want to put them on the web server. Between the two
windows is normally small bar with two arrows (one pointing to the right
hand window and other pointing to the lefthand window). Simply click on the
arrow point towards the righthand window which will then take the files from
your PC and put them on the web server.
There is normally a log window at the bottom of the screen which tell you what
files are being transferred or if something failed what.
For the record I use gftp on Debian testing with KDE 3.5.3
