I have not done it recently. But as long as Suse does not offer to 
update a running system (like Debian does), I would not trust the 
'update' too much.

I would (or better did) do a fresh install.
I usually back up the configuration files in /etc and the dotfiles in my 
home directory, so setting up my environment is not too hard.

If you have it mounted during setup: Probably.
Don't let yast mount it while installing the new version. Then, when the 
system is up, mount it somewhere (e.g. /home/stw/Documents) so you have 
access to your data.
