[LBo] Kmail is "forgetting" password

I'll assume that you are running Linux that is installed on your hard 
drive and not a livecd.  What distro are you using?

Perhaps for some reason something is not able to write to your user 
directory.  First I would try starting kmail from an xterm.  As you run 
it, look to see if there is any write error in the xterm.  You would 
look for where it fails to write some file.
