The driver-issue is maily for the graphic-card.

Monitors don't need drivers as such. But you need to configure the 
scan/sync times, which should be specified in the monitor's manual.

The "monitor-drivers" which are displayed in many 
X11-configuration-dialogs are axactly that: Definitions of the details 
for different brands/models to save you the typing.

At least that is what I always thought they were...
