As a complete noob to linux I have forced myself to do everything using
the CLI. The sooner I get use to it the better. This way I won't develop
dependencies on the GUI. It may be some pain, but like removing a band
aid from the skin, it's better to just tear it off right away rather
than removing it inch by inch.
Just my opinion.

Could you please give us a few links referencing this? I'd like to read
more.

Just a comment Jeff. If the newbie has never used the command line
before, as is
the case of many of todays windows users. I believe telling them to dump
the GUI
immediately and use strictly the CLI would do the same thing as drive
them back
to the windows GUI, faster than anything.
That said, I agree working on a mastery if the CLI does defiantly
enhance the
users ability to manipulate, tinker, and more fully understand linux.
But that
learning can be accomplished while using the GUI.
I remember my first Red Hat 5.2 experience. It was totally CLI. I was
stubborn
and lasted about 2 days before I went back to OS/2. <grin> It took me
another
year and Mandrake 6.0 complete with GUI, to finally win me over to
linux.
