Hello everybody. I'm a Linux newbie with some computing background,
dating from the late 1960's. Got sick of FORTRAN IV long ago, found C
and loved it. Under MS DOS things were fun, but limited by the 16-bit
word size. Along came MS Windows and opened the doors for easier C
programming. The fun came back. But Windows got more and more
oppressive. With DOS my PC was really my PC, but under Windows it was
Microsoft's PC. Everybody could hack DOS but Windows was a sealed
package. My first experiences with Linux (Mandrake) were not too
enjoyable, but since trying a number of one-CD and live-CD distros I
settled on PCLinuxOS and am real happy with it. With Linux, my PC is my
PC again. The fun is back. I'll never return to Windows.
I'm really looking forward to this course. There may be an outside
chance that I can help somebody, but most of my experience is with other
OS's. I hacked the Apple II+ (who didn't?) and Control Data's Network
Operating System at one time. So unfortunately I'll probably be
learning more than teaching or helping. But then, who knows?
Eagerly awaiting the course.
