Hello everyone.
I've been using Linux for a few years now, and even though I'm only 19, I
have a job with a fortune 1000 company in Software Development. I use linux
all the time at work, since a lot of it is server side software, and I'm
pretty adept with the OS by now. I run a computer that has multiple
Operating Systems on it. I show those below. I also have a Mythbox that I
detail below, and a Desktop System/Webserver that I show below too. I have a
special old computer that technically can't run windows with the specs it
has, but I have XP running on. It burns my lightscribe disks, as lightscribe
isn't supported in Linux, and it's impossible to run in Wine or in a virtual
machine. I have a MythBox (kind of like a Tivo) that I built that I tell
about below also.
----MULTI BOOT SYSTEM----
Gentoo 2006.1
Ubuntu (Edgy Eft)
Mepis 6.0
Debian (Unstable)
Suse Linux Enterprise Desktop 10
Windows XP SP2 (with Litestep as the shell)
----DESKTOP/SERVER----
Ubuntu 6.06 Dapper Drake
Apache 2 (As a webserver. Check out http://www.dragonfyre13.com for my
simple home site.)
----LIGHTSCRIBE SERVER----
Windows XP (no service pack installed due to low system resources: 64 MB
ram, 1.2 GB hard drive, 133mhz processor)
----MYTHBOX----
Fedora Core 4
MythTV 0.19
----LAPTOP 1----
Ubuntu Edgy Eft
----LAPTOP 2----
PCLinuxOS (MiniMe) 0.93
Xubuntu Breezy Badger
I've installed Gentoo using the stage 1 installation, (just because it was
fun, and I learned a lot) so I know how the underlying components work
pretty well. I'm trying to get my family interested in Linux, since that's
where everything is moving anyway (look as SLED versus Vista) and I want
them to be ahead of the times, instead of run over by them. I've invited my
dad, brother, and one of my best friends to this, so that they can learn
about linux, but I don't know if they will attend. I'll do my best to answer
whatever questions I can, though I know the most about Ubuntu.
Oh, I'm also attending college for a Software Engineering degree through
CTU. It conflicts with family life (I have a wife, and two beautiful
daughters, 2.5 years and 1 month old) but I want to get my degree to prove I
know what I'm capable of.
