Yes, we're talking about VMWare and the like. A virtual machine is
generally saved in a file. I might have multiple virtual systems, and
each of those would be in a file. Each file would contain all the data
for an entire system, so they can become quite large (1-2GB or more).
When planning a partition, you would want to make it large enough to
hold the expected number of virtual machines plus room to grow.

The best link I could recommend is from VMWare.
(http://www.vmware.com/products/server/) VMWare Server is currently
free, and you can play away with it. You can also try VMPlayer from
the same place, with some pre-built virtual systems.
