I agree.  I don't understand the statement.  It shouldn't matter whether
the Linux box is on a network or not.

BTW,  I should have introduced myself.  I live in Toronto.  I retired
about 3 years ago and started messing with Linux.  I am not a geek or
computer person. 

Like you, Mike,  I have a Windows box and a Linux box.  I ran each puter
on its own.  Then  I went out and bought a router (a simple wired one,
not wireless, it cost $10 US).  Now I have a network and share dsl,
files and printer.  The startup speed is the same before and after the
network was created.  So I don't understand the statement.  (not using a
network will result in slow startup) BTW, I am very proud of having
networked the two puters.   I really didn't understand what I did but
somehow got it going.
