I set up a script for a friend to use a whatismyip.com and have it
email any changes.

It would help to know if you have a domain setup. Assuming you don't
and only connect by IP, you can a) use a scritpt like I described
above or b) sign up with a free domain service such as dyndns.org and
install one of the compatible software clients that informs them of
any ip address change. (Some routers have this software built-in.)
Then just connect by domain name.
