[LBo] Memory usage.

I just had to comment on the issue of a memory monitor in gnome. (ubuntu was
specifically mentioned)

There is one included that I prefer to nearly anything else.

Just rightclick the top panel. Choose "add to panel" and then select System
Monitor.

Right click the little box that was placed on your panel, and click
Preferences.

I have checked on Memory, Processor, Network and Hard Disk. Network isn't
that useful because the graph is skewed, but it gives me the idea I'm
looking for.

Make sure to select the processor tab, and then click the box above NICE.
Change the color to grey. When you see Grey in the graph, it means that the
program using it can be over-ridden by other programs in terms of CPU usage.
So opening that document won't take forever.

Select the memory tab. MAKE SURE to change the color for cached just like
you did for Nice on the processor. This is incredibly important, because
your cache memory will be swapped out to the hard drive if another program
needs it. This means that for all intents and purposes, you don't need to
care about cache. More than likely, cache will fill up the memory that is
not being used. This is by design, it helps your programs run faster after
being idle.

This is my absolute favorite thing in Ubuntu, and all Gnome environments. I
have to have this running on all the computers. It really helps that when
you click on it, it brings up the linux equivilent of the task manager, so
if something has hung, I can kill it easily.
