First question, what distro and what desktop? I've gotten confused. Is it Ubuntu
Dapper and KDE? or Gnome?
Mike, I would like you to try this test. Create a new user and before setting
your screen saver(s), set the desktop size.
Then log that user off.
Then back on and set the screen savers.
Log off and back on.
See what the results are.
Another thought, perhaps you are asking the screen saver to show a pic at a
resolution that it can't handle unless you edit the pic in something like gimp?
Not sure about that, just a random thought. :-/
Also I wonder if the distro you are using has some "save settings for next time"
sort of screen that pops up before your 1st ever log out by that user? If so you
might consider how it's worded a moment, prior to the automatic "just click
yes/ok/whatever before your log out. I seem to remember KDE use to do something
like that. Haven't used Gnome in a while. Every new version of these desktops
seem to have new improved ways to confuse the user with their upgraded
simplicity. lol At least we have the option to get in under the hood and tinker
with the thing.
I have often messed up some desktop setting and had to start from the ground up
to confirm how I needed to set things. Mainly due to some little quirk I wasn't
aware of.
If you do get that new users settings like you want. You might consider saving
everything in your home to another location, I often have a /hold or /data
partition or file that I use for this purpose.
You can always remove any user and then re create them after you get this all
figured out. I use to run 3 different users, one for each different desktop I
wanted to try out. Remember this is a learning experience ;-) Relax, play, and
enjoy the ride.
