I guess I will give my list ... errrr 2 cents ;-)

Browser
Firefox, though I do like Epiphany and Opera. But firefox is more
standards compliant.
There are also a lot of good Extensions. One sits in the firfox status
bar and lets you use gmail space to store files. Bring it up from the
Tools menu and it looks just like an ftp client. There is also one to
save your session. I regularly save two windows which contain about 5
tabs each. Opera and elinks can automatically download torrents.

Email
Thunderbird. Mutt when accessing over ssh.

Text Editor
Vim mostly. Programming: Vim, Ajunta and Eclipse. Also Gedit, Nedit.

File Manager
bash

Ebooks
Xchm,  Gpdf or Adobe

Screen is good to have muliple "windows" over ssh.

Xchat or irssi over ssh
