As a Linux newbie last Sept, some thoughts on the last 12 months.
I am running debian and mandriva with cd bootable copies of ubuntu + knoppix.
[ I have the book "Debian Gnu/Linux Unleashed" as reference ].
My immediate priorities were to get things up and running e.g. s/card +
graphics, dial-up softmodem, printer, network etc.
I was more interested in getting a usable Gui based system than learning the
intricacies of CLI and RegEx ( my typing is awful + I am lazy ) but with the
proviso that I wanted enough CLI to "trouble-shoot" and investigate "under
the hood" when needed.
A useful modus oprandi I found was to run Konqueror with Navigation Panel to
the left and Terminal Emulator at the bottom. [ A close approximation to
Windo$e explorer ]. This allows graphical examination of the file system,
right click editing of files in KWrite and , at the same time , experiment
with commands and scripts in the Terminal.
[ I got to this stage with the invaluable help from all on the List -
especially fellow debian (RTFM) user Anita - for which a big thank you ].
I found Rute very useful in learning "processes" - file-systems, device
mounting, run levels, booting, networking, servers etc.
The 2 main confusing problems were:
1] Rute could be out of date ( tho so too is debian ).
2] Different distros organize things differently.
Generally I could sort this out if I RTFM - otherwise post question on List.
The Garrels book looks to be strong on CLI whilst Rute could still be
complimetary on some processes?
[ BTW what happened to the mailing list ? Since the server change I seem to
receive individual postings. Is this intentional? ]
Geoff.
