Tim,
You need to clean out the packages that are stored on the computer and
then you can download them fresh. I think you will find them in;
/var/cache/apt/archives
Once in there, you can pretty well clean out any and all packages that
you want. THEN, you would have to apt-get update and then try
re-installing. Can't guarantee that that is will work, but I have done
that a time or two over the year.
