Yes. If that is where you will keep all data that doesn't get installed
by one of the systems you install, then you should be good to go.

When removing the one system and then putting in another, don't leave
behind files from the old system (bins, libs, configs, etc)  and
overwrite them. Remove the files and then install the new system, hence
the need to store the user data somewhere else.

For tinkering, Arch or Gentoo will do very well for you. The only way to
tinker more would be to LFS.
