I had that problem when Linux in its infinite wisdom decided that my 
keyboard had 104 instead of 105 keys.  The solution was to enter the 
hardware configuration applet and tell it that my keyboard does indeed 
have 105 keys.

On my PCLinuxOS installation, that's Menu - System - Configuration - 
Configure your Computer, then after entering the root password, Hardware 
- Set up the Keyboard Layout.

After doing that, specifying 105 keys, my < and > key works fine again.
