For those of you in Europe who want an alternative DNS try ORSN:
http://european.nl.orsn.net/tech-switch.php
Use one DNS server from your ISP and another from a service like ORSN as a failover.

Windows sometimes hides network problems by assigning network interfaces APIPA
addresses in the range 169.254.0.1-169.254.255.254.
If you have a 169.254 address, chances are it wasn't assigned via DHCP from the
router.
