Hi,

It should be enough to restart the X server, so that the new proprietary drivers from nvidia to be used. You can do this be either restarting the gdm server or by using CTLR+ALT+BACKSPACE and then run Desktop Effects again and enable the "desktop effects". The applet requiring the restart is still on the panel, but the nvidia module is already loaded, and the "desktop effects" are enabled.
