Virus program - no. There are currently no viruses out there that will
run on Linux. Like someone else said, it would be important if you were
running a mail server that people with Windows were accessing for their
mail.
Firewall - yes. This helps to keep the bad guys off your computer. In
Windows for years and maybe still, people ran without even having a
login. I guess you noticed that you must login in Linux. And you
noticed that you have a root account for doing work on the system. Like
when you install software you have to give the root password (or use
sudo in some types of Linux.) That means that it is a bit difficult for
someone to get into your computer from the Internet. A firewall adds
another layer to that. If you are on dialup and not always online, you
are probably not as much of a target, but still I would put a firewall
on it.

Linux gives you lots of software to choose from. Welcome to the world
of Free and Open Source! Of course, as someone else said, you
definitely don't need it all. Just install what you need or want. Most
people only need what is installed by default.
