I think most of the codecs are also found through mplayer's site.  They
have an "essential" package that should work on every system depending
on the architecture of the machine and if you have Linux, Windows, or
Mac.  Note that they prefer that you use BitTorrent if you can.  There
is a chart for downloads of the codec bundle and BT is in the far right
under Linux x86. That's probably the one you want which is for Linux on
a regular PC.

As I recall, there is a README in the bundle that tells you where these
things go.
