[LBo] Setup grub to boot off external harddisk

Dave, I know there would not be a problem installing Linux on that first
drive.  I don't know about running Windows on the external.

If I were going to do this, I would leave Windows on the first drive and
make a second install of it on the external drive.  Then I would run
Linux and update the Grub menu.lst to include Windows on the external
drive.  Then reboot and see if it boots and runs.  If it does, then it
will be safe to install Linux on the first drive and let that install
Grub on that mbr again. That install of Grub should pick up the second
Linux distro on the other drive.  If it doesn't pick up the Windows on
the external drive, you could get the information from menu.lst on your
second drive and add it to the menu.lst on your first drive.  Then it
should boot.

If you can't get Windows to boot on the external, then you may want to
rethink or do more research on it.
