You know, I had a similar problem when trying to install KDE today on my
Debian Etch install. Everything was showing as "cannot be
authenticated". Then something REALLY got fubar'd and none of the
repositories worked.
I installed a program to select the fastest apt repository and wrote the
resulting output to /etc/apt/sources.list. I ran synaptic, and was
greeted with a bunch of failed hits. I even tried manually entering the
"stock" debian repositories manually, and couldn't get any hits. My
internet connection was running fine (could still browse and check mail,
etc), so I dunno what was going on.
