Well, to take LinuxBasics.org as an example:
---8<-----------------------------------------------------------------
"As a community, we depend on your feedback and collaboration. So, if
you have something to share with others, please contact us. If you have
a suggestion for a topic you would like to see covered here, please add
it on the Wishlist.
There are many ways to contribute: You can answer questions on the
mailing-list, you can write a complete tutorial or just a step-by-step
documentation on how you completed a specific task using linux. Ask
questions if the information on this site is not clear, tell us if we
got something wrong, spell-check our writings, whatever.
We are looking forward to meeting you at LinuxBasics.org "
---8<-----------------------------------------------------------------
I think this is basically the same for all projects.
The top requirement is that you are interested in the goals of the project.
If you are unsure how to get involved, ask those who give their e-mail
on the website. (That should be the "last resort". If there is a
mailing-list, forum, wiki or the like, use these first.
I have found that often, projects are also very pleased to be supported
in a "non-technical" way, like helping with documentation or designing
the artwork.
Just get in contact, volunteer projects are usually friendly :)
Stefan.
