OK, I'm not sure if this will work for you, but it's what worked for
me.  First, make sure the packages hplip and hplip-hpijs packages are
installed with cups.  Then, from a root terminal, run hp-setup and
follow all of its prompts.  After the test page prints, you can then
open the hp-toolbox from the suse menu and perform advanced printer
functions (print test pages, etc).  The hp-toolbox also has a link into
the CUPS web interface on localhost so that you can easily do CUPS
configuration as well.  This program has given me more functionality
with my old deskjet printer than I ever had under Windows 98.  My
printer was originally designed to be used with Windows 98.  The Windows
XP driver for it has very bare bones functionality and doesn't do
anything other than allow you to do basic printing.

Let me know if this doesn't work.
