Hi,
I will have to second Sam's suggestion concerning Mint Linux. I have
installed Mint, and it was a very easy install and set up the printer,
network, etc with no problems. And, xcfe4 is MUCH lighter and faster
than either KDE or GNOME.
Of course, I have also had excellent success with Mepis.
As for your problem with the Mepis install, almost looks like something
did not install completely.
256meg is not enough for some of the newer LiveCDs to boot up.
Unfortunately, one of the problems that Linux is facing by trying to add
all the eye-candy to attract windows users, is the system bloat.
Now, back onto my old soap-box. IF you have a high speed connection,
Debian is extremely easy to install using the net-install CD. You
install just what you need/want, and it works GREAT on older equipment.
I am running Debian lenny on a P133 laptop with only 64 meg of ram. It
isn't fast, but is rock solid, and uses a wireless network card very
nicely, and the install was done using a wired network card.
Go with Mint. ;-)
